Winchester 9mm Luger

Anyone bought this "Value Pack" 115gr FMJ stuff? It was $14 per 100 at wally world, so I picked up a couple boxes. I haven't used it, I've used winchester hollowpoints, but figured I'd get FMJ while its cheap.

I was loading my mac 11 mags when I noticed one round was a little off, upon further review, the equipment they used to manufacture this stuff apparently slammed a round into the wall of the casing, the back of the bullet is visible, the copper jacked sliced through the brass, and the brass sliced into the copper, its quite a sight... Could this be why people tend to shy away from winchester ammo?

I unloaded my mags and checked for more of these, this seems to be isolated, but still, check your ammo guys :confused_ma: I don't know what that would have done if It had actually chambered and I fired it :shocked_ma:

If I can find my camera I'll take a picture

Wow! I used to use that stuff. Recently I've tried a couple different cheap 9mm ammos: Blazer and Independence. The Blazer is about $8/50 and the Independence is $9/50. The Blazer is zinc casing (non-reloadable), so I decided to spend the extra buck to get brass cases. The Blazer worked fine for me, and I haven't shot the Independence yet. I'll stop shooting factory rounds when I accumulate enough brass.

I have shot many thousands of rounds of the 9mm value pack ammo and never found a round like you describe. Historically it's been accurate and reliable but dirty. Not as dirty as it used to be though.

I like Blazer too, but that's aluminum cased not zinc. Either way it's non-reloadable. It is considerably lighter weight than brass cased or steel cased ammo though. Cleaner than WWB value pack ammo as well. I haven't checked in a while but last time I did a big buy you could find bass cased Blazer online for almost the same price. The rim on the Blazer is different than that on the Winchester and it has given me trouble on one or two guns.

WWB is dirty and it's not as accurate as I'd like, but the cost (in the past) made it the cats meow.

Back when it was 8 bucks for 100 rounds I'd buy it all day long. Now Blazer brass is cheaper and a bit cleaner... I can also buy Remington UMC 9mm in 50 round boxes from Dicks sportinggoods cheaper when they run a 'case sale' and I prefer it over both of them.

I'm a big fan of fiocchi but like WWB the cost is up. All things (prices) being equal I'd buy the remington and fiocchi first the blazer next and WWB last.

I bought a few boxes last time the remington went on sale:

Ditto on the Remington UMC FMJ...seems to shoot best in my Glock 9mms. Blazer brass case stuff is a close second...Winchester White Box third.

Use them frequently, with no adverse effects.

About a year ago I was picking up Blazer 9mm at Blain's Farm and Fleet on sale for $6 for 50 rounds.

If you have one of these stores in your area you might check them out. They put ammo on sale all the time.

Bass Pro also sells the 100 round boxes also.

My digital camera is MIA, presumed dead. Heres a diagram I drew of that screwed up winchester bullet:

http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/5153/casinglg3.jpg

My glock ate this stuff without a problem, just dirtied it up a little.

I went to the sand pit today to try out that mac 11, broke after 20 shots :rolleyes_m: Theres a tiny metal retaining clip ring thing for the hammer pin. I remember looking at it in the shop before I bought it and thinking "its such a small cheap piece, can't be important, even though its a little flimsy..."

Sure enough, I'm bump firing and the ring thing snaps, gun jams, hammer pin came loose and slid out of it's place on the left side of the receiver, to the right, and the hammer was turned about 30 degrees to the left :confused_ma: Because it was a consignment item, the dealer won't get me the piece for free, which isn't a problem, I'm just amazed that it costs $3-5 to get a new one, plus who knows for shipping. .0003 cents of steel  Once I get my mill, I'll try and make a better hammer pin altogether.

That mac 11 is VERY fun though! The few rounds I hosed out of it were quite a rush :D The gun was $420 and came with 10 zytel (i know) mags that were in great shape and a mock suppressor which really adds to the bulk and makes it easier to handle. I'd rather not spend a lot of money customizing it, but once I get the mill up and running I'd like to experiment with other calibers and upper receivers/grips etc. I'm sure I'll post pictures, if/when the mill is going and I make something neat.

I'm going to pick up some more of this winchester ammo, it seems to work fine. Thanks for the tips guys, I'll look into the other brands you mentioned and see how cheap I can get it!

Dunno how that one slipped through quality control. Very bad in my opinion. Would still probably feed and go bang but could easily cause an out of battery condition or leave a big chunk of lead behind in the chamber area.

I had only three 9mm squibs in my life. One of these was WWB, the other two old Russian steel-cased rounds.
